10 Gallon Betta Community Setup: Tank Mates That Work

A 10 gallon is the smallest tank where a betta can genuinely share space with tank mates rather than merely tolerate a snail. This 10 gallon betta community setup covers species combinations that actually work long-term, aquascape choices that reduce aggression, and the behavioural signs that tell you when to separate. Written from running betta community tanks at Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park — where the 29°C ambient suits Betta splendens perfectly and 38-litre tanks (51 by 25 by 30 cm, 20 by 10 by 12 inches) fit most HDB side tables.

Why 10 Gallon Is the Minimum for Community

Bettas need personal space roughly equivalent to a 30 cm diameter circle. In a 5 gallon (19 L) there is nowhere for a stressed tank mate to escape. A 10 gallon (38 L) with 51 cm of length gives tank mates enough horizontal distance to break line of sight with the betta, which is the single biggest factor in community success. Taller 10 gallon formats work less well because escape distance is measured in length, not height.

Reading Betta Temperament First

Not every betta tolerates tank mates. Before adding anything, watch your betta for 72 hours in the tank alone. If it flares at its own reflection constantly, shreds its own fins, or charges at a finger at the glass, it will likely kill tank mates. Calm bettas that rest on leaves, ignore the glass, and cruise the tank slowly are community candidates. Female bettas and short-finned plakats usually do better than long-finned males. See the plakat betta care guide.

Tank Mates That Genuinely Work

Proven companions for a community betta in 10 gallon: 6 to 8 ember tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae), 6 to 8 chili rasboras (Boraras brigittae), 8 to 10 Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata), or 5 to 6 kuhli loaches (Pangio kuhlii) as a bottom shoal. One to two nerite snails add algae control without breeding. Pick one dither species plus one cleanup species — not all three groups at once. Our betta tank mates for 10 gallon list ranks compatibility.

Species to Avoid

Guppies and endlers have flowing fins that trigger betta aggression — they look like rival bettas. Neon tetras are widely suggested but actually nip betta fins, especially in groups under 10 where shoal stability breaks down. Angelfish, gouramis of any size, and any cichlid should never share a 10 gallon with a betta. Cherry shrimp work for some bettas and get eaten by others; if you want shrimp, Amanos are too big to fit in a betta’s mouth and survive reliably.

Long-Tail Variant: 10 Gallon Betta Community Setup with Chili Rasboras

Chili rasboras are the closest thing to a universal betta tank mate. At under 2 cm adult size they do not trigger territorial aggression, their red colouration complements most betta patterns, and their tight schooling behaviour keeps them moving as a unit rather than as individual targets. Stock 8 to 10 in a planted 10 gallon with heavy cover — they hide for the first week, then shoal openly once they learn the betta ignores them. See the chili rasbora care guide.

Aquascape for Conflict Reduction

Dense planting breaks line of sight, which reduces betta aggression by 50 to 70 percent compared to sparse setups. Plant heavy with Java fern, Anubias nana on wood, Limnophila sessiliflora stems at the back, and floating Salvinia natans or red root floaters on top. The floating plants are particularly important — bettas are labyrinth breathers and prefer surface cover when resting. Our planted betta aquascape for 10 gallon shows proven layouts.

Filtration and Flow

Bettas dislike strong current. Use a sponge filter driven by a Resun AC-1000 or a heavily baffled HOB — an AquaClear 20 with a pre-filter sponge and the flow lever at 30 percent works well. Target 3 to 4 times turnover (125 to 175 L/h effective) rather than the 4 to 6 times standard for community tanks. Tank mates like chili rasboras and ember tetras also prefer slow flow, so this serves both. See 10 gallon filter selection.

Feeding to Prevent Aggression

Feed the tank mates first with small sinking micro-pellets at the opposite end of the tank, then drop betta pellets at the surface once tank mates are eating. This establishes that tank mates get their own food without competing with the betta. Feed once daily, skip every seventh day, and you will avoid the bloating that triggers most betta aggression. Frozen bloodworms twice weekly keep colours bright.

Heater or No Heater in Singapore

Most HDB flats run 29 to 31°C ambient — exactly betta preference. A heater is only needed in air-conditioned rooms that drop below 26°C. If you do install one, use a pre-set 25 W unit for the 38-litre volume, set to 27°C, and treat it as an insurance policy rather than a daily tool. See best heater for betta tank.

First Introduction Protocol

Add tank mates before the betta, not after. Cycle the tank fully, introduce the rasbora or tetra shoal, let them settle for 10 to 14 days, then add the betta last. The betta treats the already-established shoal as residents of a shared space, rather than intruders into its territory. Reverse the order and the betta will defend the tank aggressively. See the stocking order planner.

When to Separate and Budget Summary

Signs that community has failed include shredded fins on tank mates, chased-and-cornered behaviour lasting more than 30 seconds, tank mates hiding permanently, or the betta developing stress striping. Pull the betta into a divided section or backup tank within 24 hours of seeing these signs. Keep a spare 5-gallon running as insurance — second attempts with different species sometimes work where the first failed. Budget-wise: tank $80, stand $150, filter $30 (sponge) or $65 (HOB), light $75, substrate $40, hardscape $30, plants $60, betta $15 to $40, tank mates $20 to $30, cycling kit $60 — total $560 to $635 for a proper planted betta community 10 gallon.
