200 Gallon Fish Tank Setup Guide: Architectural Planning
A 200 gallon (757 litre) aquarium is no longer just a tank — it is a piece of architecture. This 200 gallon fish tank setup guide from the Gensou Aquascaping team at 5 Everton Park, Singapore, treats the build as a miniature construction project. Typical 72x24x26 inch (183x61x66 cm) or 84x24x24 inch (213x61x61 cm) formats tip well over 900 kg once filled with substrate and hardscape. Planning has to start with the floor and end with the water change — skip the structural steps and you will learn expensive lessons.
Housing Type Realities
For HDB flats, 200 gallons is effectively off the table without extensive structural engineering consultation. Most condos require a management-approved engineer’s letter before installation. Landed properties handle the weight easily on ground floors but need surveys for upper-floor installation. Plan on “landed only” as the safe default.
Structural Survey Requirements
For any 200+ gallon build in Singapore, a professional engineer’s (PE) letter costs $600-$1,200 and is worth every cent. The PE will specify plinth dimensions, orientation relative to beams and whether additional bracing is required below the slab. Some condo management committees now demand this letter as a condition of installation — treat it as mandatory regardless.
Choosing Format: Long vs Deep
84-inch (213 cm) long formats give more swimming room for monster fish but cause doorway issues. 72-inch deep formats (26 inch height) offer more vertical presence and fit standard room layouts. For arowana and stingray builds we recommend 84 long; for discus and planted aquascape we recommend 72 deep. Anything taller than 26 inches becomes miserable to maintain without a ladder.
Custom Fabrication Quotes
At 200 gallons every tank is effectively custom. Qian Hu at Jalan Lekar fabricates 15-19 mm low-iron rimless at $3,600-$5,200. East Ocean Aquatic quotes similar spec at $3,400-$4,800. Polyart bundles tank, steel stand and sump cabinetry at $5,800-$7,500. Imported ADA-spec starts at $9,000. Second-hand 200s appear rarely on Carousell; expect $1,800-$2,800 plus $600-$900 in specialist moving costs.
Glass Specification
At 66 cm height, 19 mm low-iron glass is the practical choice for rimless 200s. 15 mm with eurobracing is acceptable for rimmed builds. Specify ClearVue or Optiwhite-grade glass with polished edges. Bead thickness 4-5 mm, neutral-cure silicone only — refuse any fabricator who uses acetic-cure (smells of vinegar) on aquarium joints at this size.
Delivery Constraints
84 inch (213 cm) tanks do not fit in HDB lifts under any loading orientation. Most condo service lifts are also out. Crane-lift access through a balcony adds $1,200-$2,200 including permits. Landed builds with ground-floor delivery are the only stress-free route. Confirm truck access and driveway clearance before ordering.
Sump Filtration is Standard
Canister filters are inadequate at this volume. Plan a 120x60x45 cm sump below the tank with 4,000 L/h return pump (Jebao DCP-8000 at $240). Four-chamber design: inlet socks, biomedia (Eheim Substrat Pro 20 L), chemical (carbon/purigen), return. Sump total build cost $1,800-$2,800 including plumbing. Overflow weir uses Herbie or BeanAnimal silent configuration.
Lighting 757 Litres
Fish-only: twin Chihiros A II 150 ($480). Planted mid-light: 3x WRGB II 120 overlapped at $1,300. High-light aquascape: twin Twinstar 1200EC pendant at $2,400. Sadly, good lighting at this scale costs more than many people’s first car — budget realistically.
Operating Costs in Singapore
Electricity for sump pump, lighting 8 hours daily, chiller where applicable runs $55-$95 monthly. Filter media replacement $220-$320 annually. Livestock health and food $1,500-$2,800 annually depending on stocking. 30% weekly water change equals 230 L — a Python hose is insufficient; plan a permanent auto-water-change or RODI plumbed system.
Budget Summary
Realistic budget mid-tier complete build including tank, welded stand, sump, lighting, heating/chiller, substrate, cycling and delivery: SGD $9,500-$14,000. Premium imported build with ADA rimless, custom hardwood cabinet and pro installation: SGD $18,000-$28,000. Add $3,000-$15,000 for livestock depending on build.
