Keeping the Marble Hatchet in Singapore Tanks
The marble hatchet is a small, peaceful surface-dweller that spends its life in the top inch of the water column, scanning for food at the surface with its distinctive keeled, hatchet-shaped body. It is a true shoaling fish and looks nervous and washed-out kept singly, so always buy a group of six or more. Because it lives and feeds right at the surface, it appreciates some floating cover and benefits from foods that stay on top long enough to be taken.
Hatchetfish are accomplished jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid or cover glass is essential, even on a tank you’d otherwise leave open-top. Singapore’s 27-29C ambient suits them, and they generally do well in the soft, slightly acidic water our dechlorinated tap provides. Acclimate new arrivals slowly by floating then drip-mixing tank water, and quarantine before adding them to a display, as surface fish can be sensitive to abrupt changes.
Browse our bottom feeders and other fish range, and read our marble hatchetfish care guide and fish quarantine protocol before stocking.
