Tropica Bacopa Salzmannii ‘Purple’ for colour at the back
This Tropica cultivar of Bacopa salzmannii brings a moody purple-to-violet tone that is hard to find among the usual greens and reds of a planted background. We like it as a colour accent in the mid-to-back of a scape, where its rounded paired leaves and upright stems give a calm, structured look that contrasts well with fine-leaved rotalas. As a medium-growth stem it is manageable rather than runaway, so it stays tidy between trims.
To pull out the purple, give it strong light and CO2; under modest lighting it leans greener and more olive but still grows reliably. Singapore’s warm rooms mean no heater is generally needed, and the soft, slightly acidic side of our tap water suits it once dechlorinated. Trim the tops and replant them to build a denser, more colourful group over successive cuttings.
