Description

Aquarium plant from tissue culture in closed cup.

Proserpinaca is a stem plant, 10-40 cm tall and 5-10 cm wide.
Cultivated in closed cups and delivered with saw-toothed leaves, which after a transitional period in the aquarium develop into long, finely denticulated, needle-like leaves.
In good light conditions it turns a beautiful copper colour and its characteristic appearance is a pleasing contrast to the other plants.
Proserpinaca palustris varies in form according to its origin. The Tropica cultivar is found on the Isla de la Juventud off Cuba. In the USA the plant is commonly known as “mermaid weed”.

1-2-GROW!
Small plants with great success. 1•2•Grow! Are very young plants cultivated and delivered directly from our laboratory. The plants are guaranteed to be free from snails, algae and pesticides and therefore are totally harmless for sensitive shrimp and fish. The range offers unique plants!
Success with your aquarium depends largely on the proper plant choice. In a 1•2•Grow! cup you buy a myriad of plants which can be divided into small portions and cover a larger area. Plants are compact from the start so you will experience a dense and beautiful growth, if you give them the right fertiliser and CO2 from the start! The range is perfect for small and medium sized aquariums, and your patience will be rewarded…
The range offers several mosses and specialties such as Rotala macrandra, Rotala ‘Bonsai’ and mini versions of traditional varieties such as Alternanthera and Eleocharis.

Carefully take the plant out of the cup and rinse off the growing media under the tap.

Split the plant in 6-8 portions using your fingers or sharp scissors (for small foreground plants).

Plant portions into the substrate using tweezers. Then watch them grow!

Proserpinaca palustris ‘Cuba’: A Copper-Toned Stem for SG Scapes

Proserpinaca palustris ‘Cuba’ is a characterful stem plant we stock for aquascapers who want warm copper and orange tones without committing to the fussiest red species. Supplied in tissue culture, it arrives clean and pest-free. The cups deliver saw-toothed emersed leaves that, after a transition period in the tank, develop into the long, finely serrated, needle-like submerged foliage that gives this Cuban cultivar its distinctive look.

Colour is the whole point here, and it depends heavily on conditions. Strong light brings out the coppery hues, while CO2 injection and consistent dosing, particularly iron and other micronutrients, keep the colour intense and the growth healthy. It pairs strikingly against green-leaved neighbours as a contrast plant. Our warm 27-29C water is no obstacle; the bigger factors are light intensity and stable nutrient supply over time.

Find more colourful options in our background plants category. Our guide on growing red plants and our notes on dosing iron for red plants explain how to maximise its colour.
