Reading the Yinsheng Warmtone hydrometer cup accurately

A swing-arm hydrometer cup like this Yinsheng is the budget-friendly way to check salinity in a marine or brackish tank, and it is where most Singapore reefers start before upgrading later. The trick to a reliable reading is removing trapped air bubbles from the arm with the supplied plastic pointer; even one bubble clinging to the gauge will throw your specific gravity off and lead you to over or under-dose salt. Tap and probe gently until the arm settles cleanly.

Bear in mind that swing-arm hydrometers are calibrated to a reference temperature, while our tanks often run warmer at 27-29C, so factor that in or you may misread the true salinity. Rinse the cup in fresh water and let it dry between uses to stop salt creep gumming up the arm, which is the usual reason these drift over time.
