Essential Aquascaping Maintenance Tools

A beautifully planted aquarium is only as good as the maintenance behind it. Regular trimming, cleaning and water changes keep an aquascape looking its best, and having the right tools makes these tasks faster and more effective. This aquascape maintenance tools guide covers every essential item you need in your kit, from scissors and tweezers to siphons and scrapers. At Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, we maintain numerous client tanks and our own displays, and this is the toolkit we rely on every day.

Aquascaping Scissors: Straight and Curved

Scissors are the most frequently used maintenance tool. Straight scissors handle general tasks: cutting stem plants to length, trimming stray leaves and snipping dead or decaying foliage. Curved scissors, sometimes called wave scissors, are essential for trimming carpeting plants. The curved blade allows you to cut flush with the substrate surface without tilting the handles at an awkward angle. Spring-loaded scissors reduce hand fatigue during extended trimming sessions on large carpets. A good pair of stainless steel aquascaping scissors costs SGD 15 to 40 for mid-range brands, and they are worth every cent.

Tweezers for Planting and Adjustments

Straight tweezers are indispensable for planting individual stems, positioning moss portions and placing small pieces of hardscape. Curved tweezers are particularly useful for inserting stems into the substrate at an angle, which improves rooting success for many species. Long tweezers, 30 cm or more, keep your hands dry and out of the tank during minor adjustments. Tweezers are also handy for removing dead leaves, pulling out uprooted plants and retrieving small items that have fallen into hard-to-reach spots behind the hardscape.

Algae Scrapers and Cleaning Magnets

Algae on the glass is inevitable, and a dedicated scraper keeps the viewing panels crystal clear. Razor blade scrapers are the most effective for glass tanks, slicing through even the toughest green spot algae in a single pass. Never use a razor on acrylic tanks, as it will scratch the surface; use a soft pad scraper or a dedicated acrylic-safe tool instead. Magnetic algae cleaners allow you to scrub the inside of the glass from the outside, which is convenient for daily touch-ups between full maintenance sessions. Brands like Flipper and Mag-Float are popular and available in Singapore for SGD 15 to 50.

Gravel Vacuum and Siphon

A gravel vacuum, also known as a siphon, is essential for water changes and substrate cleaning. It uses gravity to draw water from the tank into a bucket, with a wider tube at the tank end that agitates the substrate and lifts trapped detritus without removing the gravel or soil itself. For planted tanks with aquasoil, hover the siphon just above the substrate surface rather than plunging it in, as aquasoil breaks down when disturbed aggressively. A siphon with a squeeze-start or self-priming mechanism saves the unpleasant task of starting the flow by mouth. Budget SGD 8 to 20 for a quality siphon.

Buckets, Spray Bottles and Towels

Dedicated aquarium buckets should never be used for household cleaning products, which can leave toxic residues. Keep at least two buckets: one for draining old water and one for preparing new water with dechlorinator. A spray bottle filled with dechlorinated water is useful for misting emersed plants and wiping down the exterior glass. Microfibre towels absorb drips quickly and leave glass streak-free. These mundane items are easy to overlook, but having them ready and dedicated to aquarium use streamlines every maintenance session.

Water Testing Kit

Regular water testing is a core maintenance practice. A liquid test kit covering ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH is the minimum. The API Freshwater Master Test Kit is the most popular option in Singapore, priced around SGD 35 to 45, and provides hundreds of tests. For planted aquariums, a KH (carbonate hardness) test is also useful for monitoring CO2 levels in conjunction with a drop checker. TDS (total dissolved solids) meters, available for SGD 10 to 20, provide a quick snapshot of overall water mineral content and are especially useful for shrimp keepers.

Substrate Tools: Spatulas and Sand Flatteners

A substrate spatula or flattener is a long, flat tool used to smooth and shape aquasoil or sand. After trimming sessions, disturbed substrate often needs levelling. A sand flattener is particularly important in iwagumi layouts where the cosmetic sand foreground must remain smooth and uniform. Some aquascapers fashion their own from stainless steel strips or repurposed kitchen tools. Commercial versions from brands like ADA and Chihiros offer elegant designs but at a premium price. A simple DIY option from a hardware store works just as well for most hobbyists.

Putting Your Kit Together

A complete maintenance kit for a planted aquarium can be assembled for SGD 80 to 150, depending on brand preferences. The essentials are straight and curved scissors, straight and curved tweezers, an algae scraper, a siphon, dedicated buckets, a water test kit and a few towels. Store everything in a caddy or toolbox near the tank so it is always ready when maintenance day comes. Consistency is the key to a thriving aquascape; with the right tools at hand, maintenance becomes a pleasure rather than a chore.
