Best Aquarium Water Test Kits Compared: API, Salifert and Hanna

Accurate water testing separates successful aquarists from those who chase problems they cannot diagnose. The best aquarium water test kit gives you reliable readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and other parameters that directly affect livestock health and plant growth. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, Singapore, we test water daily across our breeding racks and display tanks, and we have strong opinions on which kits deliver consistent results versus which ones waste your money.

Types of Test Kits

Aquarium water testing falls into three categories: liquid reagent kits, test strips and digital instruments. Liquid reagent kits use chemical reactions that produce colour changes you match against a reference card. Test strips dip into the water and change colour across multiple pads simultaneously. Digital instruments use electronic probes or photometers for numerical readings. Each has trade-offs in accuracy, convenience and cost that suit different hobbyists.

API Freshwater Master Test Kit

The API Freshwater Master Test Kit is the entry point for most hobbyists and covers pH, high-range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. It contains enough reagent for approximately 800 tests, making the cost per test extremely low at around SGD 0.05 each. The kit retails for SGD 35-45 in Singapore. Results are read by comparing test tube colour against printed cards. Accuracy is adequate for routine monitoring, with ammonia and nitrite readings being the most reliable. The nitrate test requires vigorous shaking of the second reagent bottle for at least 30 seconds; skip this step and you will get falsely low readings, a common mistake. The colour cards can be difficult to interpret under different lighting conditions, particularly for the nitrate test where shades of orange and red look similar.

Salifert Test Kits

Salifert kits are sold as individual parameter tests rather than bundled master kits. Each test uses a titration or colour-change method with higher-grade reagents than API. The Salifert nitrate kit, for example, produces sharper colour distinctions that are easier to read accurately. Salifert also offers parameters not covered by API’s master kit, including KH, GH, phosphate and calcium. Individual kits cost SGD 18-28 each, so building a complete set runs SGD 100-150. Each kit provides roughly 50-100 tests depending on the parameter. For planted tank enthusiasts who dose fertilisers and CO2, the Salifert phosphate and KH kits are particularly valuable. The main drawback is the higher per-test cost and the need to purchase each parameter separately.

Hanna Instruments Checkers

Hanna Checkers are handheld digital photometers that measure specific parameters with laboratory-grade precision. The Hanna Phosphate Checker (HI713), for instance, reads phosphate to 0.01 ppm resolution, far exceeding what any liquid kit can distinguish. The Hanna Nitrate Checker provides similarly precise readings. Each Checker costs SGD 60-90 for the instrument, plus SGD 20-30 for reagent refills of 25 tests. This makes Hanna the most expensive option per test but also the most accurate. Results are displayed as a numerical reading on an LCD screen, eliminating the subjectivity of colour matching entirely. For serious planted tank hobbyists running EI or lean dosing methods, this precision lets you fine-tune fertiliser dosing with confidence.

Accuracy Comparison

In our testing, API kits provide readings within approximately 10-20% of laboratory values for most parameters. Salifert narrows this to roughly 5-10%. Hanna Checkers typically land within 2-5% of laboratory reference values. For routine maintenance, checking whether ammonia is present or whether nitrate is creeping above 20 ppm, API is perfectly adequate. For dialling in precise fertiliser dosing schedules or troubleshooting subtle water chemistry issues, Salifert and Hanna offer the resolution you need. The best aquarium water test kit for you depends entirely on how much precision your goals demand.

Testing Singapore Tap Water

Understanding your source water is the foundation of good water management. PUB tap water in Singapore typically reads pH 7.0-7.5, GH 2-4, KH 1-3, ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate under 5 ppm. It is treated with chloramine rather than free chlorine, which API’s ammonia test will detect as a low positive reading if you test untreated tap water. Always dechlorinate before testing to get accurate results. Knowing your baseline parameters makes it much easier to identify changes caused by your tank’s biology, feeding levels or fertiliser dosing.

How Often to Test

New tanks should be tested daily for ammonia and nitrite during the cycling period, typically four to six weeks. Once established, weekly testing of pH, nitrate and any parameters relevant to your dosing regimen is sufficient. Shrimp breeders keeping sensitive Caridina species should test GH, KH and TDS at every water change. After any significant change, such as adding new livestock, changing filter media or adjusting CO2, increase testing frequency for a week to catch any parameter swings early.

Our Recommendation

Start with the API Freshwater Master Test Kit as your baseline. It is affordable, widely available in Singapore and covers the essentials. Add individual Salifert kits for KH and phosphate once you begin CO2 injection and fertiliser dosing. If you progress to breeding sensitive Caridina shrimp or competition aquascaping, invest in Hanna Checkers for phosphate and nitrate. This layered approach builds your testing capability alongside your skill level without requiring a large upfront investment.
