Acropora Tortuosa Care Guide: Demanding SPS Branching
Acropora tortuosa is not for first-time SPS keepers. This acropora tortuosa care guide assumes you already run a stable reef with rock-solid alkalinity, dialled-in lighting, and mature filtration. Gensou Aquascaping at Everton Park sees tortuosa succeed in systems that have been running twelve months or more with stable A. millepora, montipora, and birdsnest colonies in place. The reward is dense, branching colonies in electric blue, purple, and tricolour morphs that define trophy-level SPS tanks. The penalty for parameter drift is total colony loss in 48 hours.
Quick Facts
- Scientific name: Acropora tortuosa
- Care level: advanced SPS, unforgiving
- PAR range: 300-450, high intensity
- Flow: strong, turbulent, 30-50x turnover
- Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH rock stable (<0.2 dKH daily swing)
- Ca 420-440 ppm, Mg 1350-1400 ppm
- Nitrate 1-5 ppm, phosphate 0.02-0.05 ppm
Identifying Tortuosa
Tortuosa forms tall, thin, tapering branches with axial corallites that are long and tubular — giving the branches a bristly appearance. The Latin name refers to the “twisted” branching pattern. Classic morphs include Walt Disney (purple and pink stripes), Pink Floyd, and the tricolour pieces that trade for $250-800 per 2cm frag in Singapore.
Lighting Demands
Tortuosa wants 300-450 PAR at the colony tip. Lower than 250 and colour fades; above 500 and tissue pales from photoinhibition. Measure PAR monthly — LED fixtures drift, and a degraded puck can drop 50 PAR without visible change to the human eye. Blue-heavy reef spectra with violet and UV channels bring out the metallic blues and purples. Photoperiod 8-10 hours peak with ramp-up and ramp-down.
Flow Is Critical
Strong, turbulent, varied flow — 30-50x tank turnover. Tortuosa’s thin branches need the boundary layer broken constantly for gas exchange. Dead zones cause STN from the base up. Two gyre pumps on alternating reef-crest modes or multiple Vortech-style powerheads work well. If you see detritus settling on branches, flow is inadequate.
Alkalinity Stability
This is where most hobbyists lose tortuosa. Alkalinity must stay between 8 and 9 dKH with less than 0.2 dKH daily swing. A calcium reactor with reliable CO2 supply, or redundant dosing pumps with alkalinity-coupled controller (Apex Trident, GHL KH Director) is effectively mandatory. Never skip testing — Hanna checker readings three times weekly minimum. Nighttime pH drops from tight HDB rooms can swing alkalinity; run a refugium on reverse photoperiod to buffer.
Nutrient Balance
Nitrate 1-5 ppm and phosphate 0.02-0.05 ppm is the sweet spot. Zero nutrients = bleached tortuosa within weeks. Elevated nutrients = browning and algae growth on the skeleton. Dose nitrate (KNO3) or phosphate (K2HPO4) to maintain readings if skimming and refugium export strips the system too hard.
Placement and No Target Feeding
Mount tortuosa high in the tank on stable rockwork where it will not need moving. Once encrusted, the colony cannot be relocated without massive stress. Leave 10-15cm clearance around the colony for lateral branching. Do not target feed — SPS absorb dissolved nutrients and micro-plankton naturally. Amino acid dosing supports colour.
Pest Protocol
Quarantine every new tortuosa frag for 76 days in a separate system. AEFW and red bugs destroy colonies silently. Dip in Bayer 15 minutes on arrival, then re-dip at day 10 and day 20 to catch egg hatches. Interceptor-treat QT for red bugs preemptively for pricey pieces.
Singapore Sourcing
Aquacultured tortuosa frags from Bali and Indonesian farms ship weekly at $150-400 for standard named pieces. ORA and TSA mariculture through US and EU importers arrives occasionally at $300-800 per frag. Expect at least 12 months from frag to colony in a stable system.
