Nitrite and the Cycle Diagnostic
Nitrite reads 0 to 5 ppm with 0.25 ppm resolution; the pink colour shift is one of the clearest in the kit, which is useful since nitrite spikes are the key indicator during the second half of a fishless cycle. Accuracy sits within plus or minus 0.25 ppm, which is fine for cycling decisions. At stable zero readings week after week, the tank has moved beyond needing the API for cycle confirmation.
Nitrate Resolution Is the Weakness
Nitrate is the kit’s weakest parameter. The colour chart jumps in large steps (5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 ppm) and the orange-red gradient is hard to read under warm-white kitchen lighting. For planted tanks targeting 10 to 20 ppm nitrate, the chart resolution is too coarse for dosing decisions. pH and the High-Range Confusion
Two pH bottles ship in the kit: a standard range (6.0 to 7.6) and a high range (7.4 to 8.8). PUB tap typically tests around 7.2 to 7.6, which sits at the crossover point. Always run the standard range first; if it reads at the top of the scale, retest with the high range. Shake the Nitrate Bottle Properly
