Sesarmid Mangrove Crab Care Guide: Land Climber Brackish

Climb up the buttress roots of any mangrove tree in Sungei Buloh at low tide and you will find sesarmids picking detritus off the bark with surprising agility. The sesarmid mangrove crab is a niche but rewarding inhabitant for tall paludarium builds because it is one of the few decapods that genuinely climbs vertical surfaces and lives mostly above the waterline. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers Sesarma husbandry, climbing furniture and the brackish chemistry that keeps these crabs healthy long-term.

What Makes Sesarmids Different

Sesarmids are climbing mangrove crabs from the family Sesarmidae — relatives of vampire crabs but adapted to vertical bark and root systems rather than the leaf-litter floor. Adult carapace width is 2-4 cm depending on species, with strong chelipeds for gripping bark and sturdy walking legs adapted for climbing. The most common Singapore-traded species is Sesarma mederi, with Episesarma species (the violet-back climbing crab) appearing occasionally.

Tall Paludarium Format

Sesarmids need height more than floor area. A 45 cm wide by 45 cm deep by 60 cm tall enclosure suits a pair, with the water portion only 25-30 per cent of the footprint at the base. Vertical driftwood, tall cork bark slabs, and rough mopani branches provide the climbing structure. Avoid smooth glass or acrylic on the walls without bark cladding because crabs cannot grip those surfaces and stress badly. Browse the paludarium and terrarium tank range for tall front-opening enclosures.

Brackish Water Chemistry

Target specific gravity 1.005-1.010 — lower than fiddler crabs because sesarmids spend less time submerged. Mix marine salt with dechlorinated PUB tap water and age 24 hours before adding. The water section needs a small recirculating pump or sponge filter to prevent stagnation; flow can be gentle because the crabs rarely swim. Check salinity weekly with a refractometer and replenish evaporation with fresh water to prevent creep.

Substrate and Land Portion

Use a coco fibre and sphagnum moss mix on the land portion, kept slightly damp but never waterlogged. A 5-8 cm depth gives space for occasional digging. Mound the substrate against the back wall to support climbing structure and create a planted slope. Suitable plants include Acrostichum aureum (mangrove fern), Cyperus papyrus, and brackish-tolerant pothos cultivars. Sourcing live mangrove material is restricted in Singapore — propagules cannot be harvested from coastal reserves.

Diet and Behaviour

Sesarmids are omnivorous detritivores, eating leaf litter, algae, fallen fruit and occasional protein. Offer dried mangrove leaves, sea almond leaves, blanched spinach, fruit slices and sinking shrimp pellets. Browse the leaf litter and botanicals range for sea almond, magnolia and oak leaves that double as both food and tank decor. Feed two to three times weekly in small portions to prevent water fouling.

Group Dynamics

Sesarmids are more tolerant of conspecifics than fiddler crabs but still need adequate climbing furniture to spread out. Keep pairs or trios in a 45 cm tall enclosure, larger groups only in correspondingly larger tanks. Males are slightly more aggressive than females during breeding periods. Avoid mixing with vampire crabs, fiddlers or other sesarmid species — territorial conflicts almost always escalate.

Climate and Lighting

Singapore ambient 24-28°C is ideal; no heater required. Humidity 70-90 per cent maintained by the standing water section and a tight glass lid with limited ventilation. LED lighting on a 10-12 hour cycle. UVB is unnecessary because sesarmids are crepuscular and seek shade during peak daylight; bright direct lighting causes them to retreat to bark crevices and never emerge. Indirect or moderate ambient lighting suits them best.

Sourcing and Health Checks

Sesarmids cost SGD 12-30 per specimen at Singapore importers, with Episesarma species pulling premiums up to SGD 50. Most stock is wild-caught from Indonesian or Malaysian mangroves and arrives stressed. Healthy specimens climb actively when handled, have full sets of limbs, and show bright colouration without dull or grey patches on the carapace. Quarantine for two weeks in a small brackish holding tub before introducing to a planted display. The brackish water testing equipment includes refractometers and salt mixes appropriate for sesarmid setups.
