Aquarium Total Cost of Ownership 3-Year Guide: SGD Annualised
Setup cost is the visible figure. Total ownership cost is the bill that decides whether the hobby fits the household. The aquarium total cost ownership calculation amortises capital purchase across a realistic three-year horizon, adds running costs, and produces an honest annual figure to compare against alternatives. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park works the maths for three common Singapore tank tiers — 60 L planted, 120 L community, 200 L reef — and explains the depreciation assumptions. The aquarium total cost ownership figure is the number new hobbyists should ask for before the first impulse purchase.
Quick Answer Rule of Thumb
For 2026 Singapore prices, annualise as: 60 L planted around SGD 800-900/year, 120 L community SGD 1,200-1,500/year, 200 L mid-tech planted SGD 1,800-2,400/year, 200 L reef SGD 5,000-6,500/year, 400 L large reef SGD 12,000+/year. The reef premium reflects salt mix, supplements, and chiller electricity rather than any single big-ticket item.
The TCO Method
Total ownership cost = setup capital ÷ horizon (years) + monthly running cost × 12. Horizon is normally 3 years for amortisation because tanks, filters and lights typically need refresh or replacement at year 4-5. Add an unscheduled-expense contingency of 10-15 per cent for breakages, livestock loss, and seasonal upgrades. The result is a comparable annual figure across tank tiers.
Worked Example: 60 L Planted Low-Tech
Setup capital: tank SGD 150, light SGD 120, filter SGD 80, heater SGD 30, substrate SGD 60, hardscape SGD 80, plants SGD 120, livestock SGD 60, conditioner and start-up SGD 100, miscellaneous SGD 100 = SGD 900 total. Monthly running SGD 35 (see the monthly running cost guide). Three-year total: SGD 900 + (SGD 35 × 36) = SGD 2,160 = SGD 720/year. Add 15 per cent contingency = SGD 828/year.
Worked Example: 200 L Mid-Tech Planted
Setup capital: tank and cabinet SGD 800, LED light SGD 350, canister filter SGD 280, CO2 system SGD 350, chiller SGD 400, substrate SGD 180, hardscape SGD 250, plants SGD 300, livestock SGD 250, dosing pumps and bottles SGD 200, miscellaneous SGD 200 = SGD 3,560 total. Monthly running SGD 95. Three-year total: SGD 3,560 + (SGD 95 × 36) = SGD 6,980 = SGD 2,327/year. Stock from the aquarium tank range and CO2 range.
Worked Example: 200 L Reef
Setup capital: rimless tank and stand SGD 1,800, reef LED SGD 900, return pump SGD 250, skimmer SGD 400, chiller SGD 600, heater SGD 80, sump SGD 350, live rock SGD 400, sand SGD 120, RODI unit SGD 350, salt mix starter SGD 120, test kits SGD 250, livestock and corals starter SGD 1,500, miscellaneous SGD 300 = SGD 7,420 total. Monthly running SGD 280 including coral additions. Three-year total: SGD 7,420 + (SGD 280 × 36) = SGD 17,500 = SGD 5,833/year.
The Depreciation Assumption
Three years matches typical refresh cadence: tanks last 8-12 years (pro-rate by horizon), pumps and impellers last 3-5 years (full refresh), LED fixtures degrade 5 per cent yearly and replace at year 5, substrate refresh at year 3-5 for aquasoil, hardscape lasts indefinitely. The 3-year amortisation is conservative because some equipment outlasts it, but it captures realistic refresh and prevents the “but I only paid SGD 900 for the setup” trap when year 4 brings SGD 600 of replacements.
Singapore-Specific Variables
Local prices vary 20-30 per cent between SLF Aquarium, Iwarna, C328 and ANS — shop around for big-ticket items. Shopee and Lazada beat physical shops on standardised equipment but lose on plants and livestock. Resale value of equipment on Carousell recovers 30-50 per cent of original cost if you exit cleanly within 18 months. Factor resale into your TCO if you plan to upsize or exit.
Common Pitfalls
Counting only the visible big-ticket items and ignoring substrate, hardscape and plants — those add SGD 200-500 easily. Forgetting livestock as capital cost — a 30-fish stocking at SGD 5-15 per fish lands SGD 150-450. Underestimating consumables (test reagents, additives, replacement filter media). Skipping the contingency line — every tank has a year where something fails outside warranty.
When to Override the Calculator
Multi-tank hobbyists share equipment costs (chiller across two tanks, RO unit across three) — TCO drops sharply for the second and third tanks. Breeders selling fry recover 20-50 per cent of running cost through Carousell sales. Reef hobbyists fragging corals recover 30-100 per cent of coral cost over 18 months. Use the framework as the worst-case figure and adjust for your specific revenue offsets.
