ANS Lava Rock as Biological Media in SG Filters

This 3kg lot of lava rock works as a high-surface-area home for nitrifying bacteria, the colonies that quietly convert ammonia and nitrite into safer nitrate. Its open, porous structure gives those bacteria plenty of footing, which is why many of us pack it into canister trays, sumps or media bags as an affordable alternative to ceramic rings. The included net makes it easy to lift the whole batch out for a rinse without scattering rock through your filter.

Rinse thoroughly before use to clear loose grit, since lava can shed fine dust that clouds new water. Once seated in flow it behaves like any biomedia: leave the colony undisturbed during cycling and only rinse in old tank water, never under chlorinated SG tap, which would set the bacteria back. It pairs well after mechanical wool so debris is caught before it clogs the porous surface.
