Aquascaping with ANS Sansan Wood (20-40cm)

Sansan wood gives you that gnarled, fine-branching silhouette aquascapers love for building height and creating natural-looking trees or root structures. Each 20-40cm piece is unique, so think about how the branches will fan out before you commit to a position; the best layouts often come from pairing two or three pieces so the grain and angles flow together rather than fighting each other.

Like all natural driftwood, expect it to leach tannins and tint the water amber for a while, and to float until waterlogged. We boil or soak smaller pieces and weigh larger ones down with stone for a couple of weeks before scaping. A white biofilm often appears on fresh wood in our warm tanks; it is harmless and usually grazed off by shrimp and otos within days, so resist the urge to tear the tank apart over it.
