The grid-like appearance of the leaves is unique and a real eye-catcher. However, the species is quite demanding in care, even for the plant connoisseur. A stronger water movement and cooler water are an advantage. Regular resting periods with low temperatures and less lighting must be observed in order to enjoy this beauty permanently.

Growing Aponogeton Madagascariensis in Singapore Tanks

The Madagascar lace plant is one of the most requested specimens we stock, and also one of the trickiest to keep happy in our climate. Its skeletal, lattice-like leaves need clean, well-oxygenated water and gentle but constant flow to stay free of detritus and algae. In Singapore’s perpetually warm rooms this is the species we most often recommend pairing with a chiller, since it genuinely prefers cooler, fresher water than most tropical aquatics.

Plant the bulb so the crown sits just at the substrate surface rather than buried, and give it open space away from competing stems. A nutrient-rich substrate, moderate light and steady CO2 help the lace structure develop fully. Expect a natural rest period where leaves die back; don’t bin the bulb. Reduce feeding, leave it undisturbed, and new growth typically returns. Patience matters far more than fussing with this plant.
