Using Ophiopogon Japonica (Mondo Grass) in SG Setups
Mondo grass is a handsome grass-like plant we see hobbyists drop straight into submerged aquascapes hoping for a permanent carpet, but it’s worth being upfront: this is a terrestrial and bog plant, not a true aquatic. Fully underwater it stays green and tidy for a few months before slowly declining, so we treat it as a temporary green accent rather than a long-term lawn replacement in a planted display.
Where it genuinely thrives in Singapore is in paludariums, terrarium edges and the emersed banks of riparium setups, where its roots sit in damp substrate and the blades reach into our humid air. There it grows lush and lasts indefinitely. If you do submerge it, keep the count low; a tank overloaded with non-aquatic plants tends to foul water and throw your balance off.
Learn how it fits among different builds in our aquarium vs terrarium vs paludarium overview and our emersed section guide. See more greenery in our stem plants selection.
