Keeping Siamese Algae Eaters in Singapore Tanks
The Siamese Algae Eater is one of the few fish that genuinely grazes black beard and hair algae, which is why so many local planted-tank keepers add a small group. They are active, fast swimmers that do best in a tank of at least three feet once mature, so factor that into HDB or condo floor space before buying. A secure lid matters too, since startled SAEs can leap.
Our ambient 27-29C suits them well, so a heater is rarely needed here. They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water, which matches our treated tap once it has been properly conditioned. Keep them in shoals of four or more to spread out their natural skittishness, and offer sinking wafers or blanched vegetables alongside algae, because a hungry SAE will start nibbling soft plants and biofilm instead.
Browse the rest of our algae eaters range, and read our algae eater guide plus the SAE versus Chinese algae eater comparison so you bring home the right fish. Acclimate slowly using our acclimation method.
