The Otocinclus Catfish is a great addition to a peaceful planted tank and a small school of them can form a great algae cleanup crew. These catfish like to hang out under and on aquarium plant leaves as well as sucking on the tank glass. However, they can be a little reclusive at times and providing places to hide will help make them feel secure. Because they can be quite shy it’s a good idea to avoid keeping them with overly aggressive tank mates or other fish large enough to eat them.

How To Safely Add Fish To Tank
- Set live stock aside with transportation bag in room temperature place for 30 minutes.
- Then transfer bag to float in aquarium for another 30 minutes
- Use a fish net to transfer the live stock by scooping it from the bag into the tank.
Note: Do not release live stocks together with the transportation water into tank.
Zebra Otocinclus: A Striking Algae Crew for SG Nano Tanks
The Zebra Otocinclus (Otocinclus cocama) brings the same gentle, plant-safe algae grazing as the common Oto but with bold black-and-cream banding that stands out against green carpets. These small catfish are peaceful, social, and best kept in groups of six or more, where they shoal and graze confidently across glass, hardscape and broad leaves. They are ideal for planted community and shrimp tanks where a larger, aggressive algae eater would cause trouble.
Otos are sensitive to water quality and do poorly in newly set-up tanks, so they belong only in a mature aquarium with established biofilm and soft algae to graze. Singapore’s warm 27-29C ambient suits them, but be mindful that warm water lowers oxygen, so keep good surface movement. They often arrive thin from transport, so a tank already carrying diatoms and aufwuchs, supplemented with blanched vegetables, gives them the best start.
