Aquario Neo CO2 Diffuser Line Review: Flat Pro Mini Sizes
Korean brand Aquario Neo has built a small but devoted following in the Singapore planted-tank scene because their ceramic diffusers do something deceptively simple very well — they produce mist-fine CO2 bubbles without working pressures climbing into the danger zone. The Aquario Neo CO2 diffuser line spans a half dozen models from pico-tank Mini units to inline Pro versions, and after running them across showroom builds at Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, the differences between siblings are sharp enough to matter. This review covers each variant and where it fits.
Why Bubble Size Matters
CO2 dissolves into water by surface contact. Smaller bubbles equals more surface area equals more dissolved CO2 from the same gas volume. A coarse diffuser wastes 30-40 per cent of your CO2 to off-gassing at the surface. A fine ceramic disc like Aquario Neo’s pushes mist below 0.1 mm bubble diameter, and most of it dissolves before reaching the surface. That is the entire selling proposition.
Neo Diffuser Mini: The Pico Solution
The Mini is the smallest in the line, designed for tanks under 30 litres. The ceramic disc is roughly 12 mm wide and the glassware is petite enough to hide behind a small piece of dragon stone. Working pressure stays around 1.0-1.5 bar with a fresh disc. Singapore retail is SGD 28-38 at Gensou and selected scaping shops. Pair it with a CO2 system from the equipment category for a complete pico build.
Neo Diffuser Original: The Workhorse
The Original is the standard 30-60 litre diffuser, with a 17 mm ceramic disc and a counter loop on the inlet. This is the most common Aquario unit in Singapore tanks because the size suits the dominant 45-60 cm aquascape segment. Working pressure runs 1.5-2.0 bar fresh. Expect to pay SGD 38-48. Mist density is excellent and bubble dispersion across the disc is even, with no dead zones.
Neo Diffuser Flat: Side-Mount Discretion
The Flat takes the same ceramic disc but mounts horizontally against the back glass via suction, lying parallel to the glass instead of sitting in mid-water. This hides the diffuser almost completely behind plant growth and is favoured by competition aquascapers who want zero visible equipment. Working pressure is similar to the Original at 1.5-2.0 bar. SGD 45-55 retail. The flat geometry needs slightly more cleaning attention because the underside collects detritus.
Neo Diffuser Pro: For Larger Tanks
The Pro scales the ceramic disc to 30 mm, doubling diffusion area, and is rated for tanks up to 120 litres. Working pressure climbs to 2.0-2.5 bar with a fresh disc. SGD 65-85 retail. This is the right pick for a 90 cm planted tank where the Original’s smaller disc would force you to push gas pressure too high to maintain mist density. Pair with a Eheim Classic 2215 or larger canister to circulate the mist.
Neo Inline Diffuser: For Canister Lines
The Inline variant routes CO2 directly into a canister filter‘s outflow tubing, dissolving gas through the ceramic disc inside the line. This keeps all CO2 hardware out of the display tank — a popular choice for ADA-style minimalist scapes. Tubing diameters of 12/16 mm and 16/22 mm are supported. SGD 70-95 retail. The trade-off: slightly higher working pressure (2.5-3.0 bar) and the need to occasionally remove and clean the inline body, which interrupts filtration.
Lifespan, Pressure and Weak Points
A clean disc holds peak diffusion for six to nine months under daily CO2. After that, biofilm clogs pores and bubble size grows. A 20-minute soak in 1:5 bleach followed by dechlorinator dip restores most performance. Replace every 12-18 months; discs run SGD 12-18. Pair with a quality regulator and low-pressure gauge — cheap single-stage regulators cause pressure creep that pops discs. Glassware is fragile, suction cups release after 3-4 months in chloramine water, and Inline o-rings degrade by month nine.
Pricing, Buying and Picking the Right Model
Gensou carries the full line at 5 Everton Park; Polyart and Reef Discus Centre stock Original and Pro consistently. Carousell second-hand units appear from scapers downsizing — inspect for bleach damage. Lazada has legitimate distributors but counterfeit Korean rebrands circulate; verify laser etching on the metal frame. Pico under 30L: Mini. Standard 45-60 cm: Original or Flat. 90 cm: Pro. Minimalist canister builds: Inline. The Flat is the aesthetic enthusiast’s choice; the Pro is right for larger planted displays.
