Why Tempered Can Spontaneously Shatter

The phenomenon is rare — roughly one in 10,000 panels — but documented well enough in the construction industry that ASTM standards now specify heat-soak testing for safety-critical applications. Thickness Versus Water Height Calculation

Hydrostatic pressure rises linearly with depth. Standard industry calculations using a safety factor of 3.8 give the following minimums for annealed glass: 6 mm for tanks up to 30 cm tall, 8 mm for 30-45 cm, 10 mm for 45-60 cm, 12 mm for 60-75 cm, and 15 mm for 75-90 cm. Tanks exceeding 90 cm height should be designed by a qualified glass supplier with engineering calculations sized for the specific dimensions.

Edge Polish and Stress Concentration

Cut glass edges contain microscopic chips that act as stress concentrators. A polished edge — flat-ground or arris-polished — removes these stress points and dramatically reduces the chance of crack initiation under impact or pressure. Silicone Seam Inspection

Bracing and Rim Construction

Rimless tanks rely entirely on glass thickness and silicone strength. Rimmed tanks use plastic top and bottom braces to distribute load — useful for tanks above 100 litres. Cross braces across the top of larger rimless tanks prevent bowing of the long front panel and add a meaningful safety margin. If buying second-hand, prefer rimmed or braced rimless construction for any tank above 60 cm length.

Acrylic as an Alternative

Acrylic tanks weigh about half what glass tanks weigh and shatter into chunks rather than razor shards. Downsides: scratches readily, yellows over a decade, costs roughly 50-80 per cent more for equivalent volume. What to Do If You Spot a Crack
