Rotala Macrandra ‘Mini Red’ for Compact SG Layouts

Rotala macrandra ‘Mini Red’ brings the same coveted red tones as the larger macrandra forms but in a shorter, more compact habit, which makes it genuinely useful for the nano and cube tanks that fit so well in HDB flats and condos. Rather than a towering background stem, it works as a red accent in the mid-background of a smaller aquascape. Like all macrandra, it is a high-tech plant that wants bright light, stable CO2, and consistent micronutrient dosing to hold colour.

Singapore’s warm ambient water is the usual limiting factor, since macrandra colours and grows more reliably when it is a touch cooler; serious red-plant keepers here often run a chiller for this group. Plant our emersed-grown pot with a little spacing, expect a pale settling-in period, and trim frequently. Because it stays low, regular nipping keeps a dense red cushion rather than a few leggy stems.
