Rotala sp. Vietnam for the planted background
Rotala sp. Vietnam is a medium-difficulty stem that rewards patience with a soft, feathery silhouette and warm pink-to-red shoot tips when given good light. We find it slower to establish than rotundifolia but more colourful at the top, making it a favourite for filling the back corners of a Dutch-style or nature aquascape. It branches generously once trimmed, so a single pot soon becomes a full hedge.
Locally, the species sits well within our year-round warmth, so most planted tanks run it without a heater. Like other fine rotalas it appreciates clean, stable water and CO2 to colour up; the soft acidic side of Singapore tap water suits it once dechlorinated. Give it room and steady fertilisation, and avoid heavy shading from floating plants, which can wash the colour out and cause the lower stems to drop leaves.
