Bacopa Colorata Aquarium Care Guide: Pink Stem Variant
The pink-stemmed cousin of the workhorse green Bacopas, this species delivers one of the most striking colour transitions in the planted-tank hobby — apple-green new growth shifting to coral-pink mid-stem and burgundy at the apex under the right conditions. Bacopa colorata rewards keepers willing to push lighting and lean phosphate, and turns into a midground or background centrepiece once it settles. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers parameters, propagation, and the colour-tuning combinations that take this plant from green to neon.
Botanical Background
Sometimes catalogued as Bacopa caroliniana “Colorata” or Bacopa salzmannii “Colorata”, the variant is most likely a hybrid or pigment-enhanced form rather than a clean species. Leaves are oval, opposite, around 1.5-2.5 cm long. Stems thicken to about 4-5 mm at maturity and flush pink-burgundy under high light. Below the burgundy zone, lower leaves stay greener — a natural gradient that gives the plant visual depth.
Light for Colour Expression
Green-stem Bacopas tolerate medium light but Bacopa colorata needs 80-150 µmol PAR at the apex to express the pink pigment. Below 80 µmol the plant grows green only — physiologically healthy but visually disappointing. Position it within 20 cm of the surface or use a shorter tank. The LED lighting range at Gensou stocks fixtures hitting these PAR numbers on standard 60-90 cm tanks.
CO2 Demand
The plant grows under low-tech conditions but loses the pink pigment quickly without CO2. With 30 ppm CO2, growth rate is moderate (one node every 5-7 days) and colour saturates within 2-3 weeks of installation. Stable CO2 matters more than peak ppm — pulse-on/pulse-off schedules without solenoids produce variable colour. Pair with a CO2 regulator and solenoid for consistent results.
Phosphate and the Red-Pigment Pathway
Phosphate competes with iron uptake; lower water-column PO4 frees iron, which intensifies anthocyanin pigments. Run PO4 at 0.1-0.5 ppm rather than EI’s 3-6 ppm to lock in the pink. Iron in the column at 0.05-0.1 ppm via DTPA or EDDHA chelate is essential. Lean dosing schedules suit this plant; full EI dosing dilutes the colour.
Water Parameters
Temperature 22-28°C, pH 5.5-7.5, GH 2-12, KH 0-8. Singapore tap is fine; lift GH to 5-6 for tip stability. Cooler tanks (24-26°C) tend to colour more intensely — Singapore HDB tanks at 30°C ambient may need a small clip fan to drop tank temperature 2-3°C and unlock fuller colour. Ambient air conditioning at night also helps.
Planting Method
Plant individual stems 3-4 cm apart in groups of 8-15 to create a coloured mass rather than scattered single stems. Strip lower 2-3 cm of leaves before pushing into substrate to prevent rot. The plant develops adventitious roots along the stem — these are normal and can be left or trimmed for aesthetics. Substrate matters less than light and PO4; aquasoil gives the fastest establishment.
Trim and Propagation
Top-cutting is the only sustainable propagation. Trim the apical 5-7 cm with the most colour, replant directly. The original stem branches from the cut node within 2 weeks and produces 2-3 lateral shoots. Lateral shoots colour up faster than the parent stem because they grow into the high-light zone immediately. Discard the bottom-third stem after 3-4 trim cycles — old stems lose vigour.
Tank Mate Considerations
Bacopa colorata is robust enough for most community fish. Avoid herbivorous cichlids and silver dollars. Shrimp graze the stems harmlessly. Plecos may scrape young leaves; deploy them sparingly. The plant’s mid-height growth suits midground placement in 60 cm tanks or background placement in 30-40 cm tanks.
Common Problems
All-green growth despite high light: phosphate too high, drop dosing or increase water change frequency. Tip melt: GH too low (under 3) — calcium and magnesium deficit, add GH booster. Holes in mid-leaves: potassium deficit, dose 10 ppm K weekly. Sudden stem dieback: anaerobic pocket at substrate, vacuum and increase flow.
Singapore Availability
Local sourcing is hit-or-miss — most Singapore shops including Gensou stock it occasionally rather than constantly, with imports from Aquaflora and Tropica every few weeks. Pricing runs SGD 8-15 per stem bunch or SGD 12-18 per tissue-culture cup. Carousell hobbyist sellers often list propagated cuttings at SGD 5-8 per stem; verify health before buying. Pair the plant with the live plants range at Gensou for a coordinated planting list.
