Birdsnest Coral Seriatopora Care: Pink and Green Varieties
Birdsnest corals are often the first SPS a reefer attempts successfully. This birdsnest coral seriatopora care guide covers Seriatopora hystrix and Seriatopora caliendrum, the delicate-looking but surprisingly forgiving SPS that thrives at lower PAR than most acropora. Gensou Aquascaping at Everton Park recommends pink and green birdsnest as confidence-builders for Singapore reefers who have kept soft corals and LPS successfully for six months or more. Thin, needle-like branches grow visibly week to week — few corals in the hobby show progress as satisfying as a birdsnest colony filling in.
Quick Facts
- Scientific names: Seriatopora hystrix, S. caliendrum
- Care level: beginner SPS
- PAR range: 150-300, moderate
- Flow: moderate, turbulent, indirect
- Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH stable
- Ca 420-440 ppm, Mg 1300-1400 ppm
- Growth: 3-5cm annually with stable conditions
Hystrix Versus Caliendrum
S. hystrix has thinner, sharper branch tips — the “birdsnest” spiky appearance. S. caliendrum branches are slightly thicker and blunter at the tip. Both species come in pink, green, and the rarer orange or “ponape” blue-tipped morphs. Pricing in Singapore ranges $20-50 for standard green and pink frags, $80-150 for coloured varieties.
Lighting Tolerance
Birdsnest accepts 150-300 PAR comfortably, which makes it one of the most placement-flexible SPS options. Pink morphs pale at high light above 300 PAR and intensify at 180-220. Green morphs happily sit at 250-300. Acclimate new frags at 150 PAR for 5-7 days, then move to final placement. Blue-heavy reef spectra enhance fluorescence.
Flow Requirements
Moderate, turbulent, indirect flow. Direct laminar blast snaps the thin branches. Place birdsnest on rockwork where flow shifts through it rather than hitting it head-on. Branches flex slightly in correct flow — if they whip visibly, move the colony. Detritus on branches signals low flow; increase circulation.
Water Chemistry
Alkalinity 8-9 dKH stable, calcium 420-440 ppm, magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. Birdsnest tolerates slightly higher alkalinity swings than acropora — up to 0.5 dKH per day — without STN, making it forgiving for reefers still dialling in dosing. Salinity 1.025-1.026, temperature 25-26°C via chiller in Singapore setups.
Nutrients
Nitrate 2-8 ppm and phosphate 0.03-0.08 ppm suit birdsnest. Pink morphs especially need some nutrient presence — ultra-low systems bleach pink birdsnest within weeks. Green birdsnest tolerates wider nutrient ranges. No target feeding; SPS rely on photosynthesis and dissolved organics.
Placement and Compatibility
Birdsnest is semi-aggressive with sweeper tentacles at night, but the modest reach means 5cm clearance is enough. Place in mid or upper rockwork with good flow exposure. Avoid direct contact with Euphyllia, chalice, or acan, all of which outcompete birdsnest in stinging power. Birdsnest is a favourite of commensal gall crabs — small pink or white crustaceans inside modified branches. They are harmless and actually indicate a healthy, established colony.
STN and RTN Recovery
Birdsnest will show tissue recession (STN) from the base up if alkalinity swings sharply or flow drops. If caught early — tissue still covering 70%+ of branches — frag the healthy tips, dip, and remount. Rapid tissue necrosis (RTN) strips a colony in 24 hours and is usually caused by shock, bacterial infection, or major chemistry crash. Fragging healthy branches immediately is the only rescue.
Fragging Birdsnest
The easiest SPS to frag. Snap a branch 2-3cm from the tip with sharp wire cutters, dip in Bayer 5 minutes, and glue to a plug with cyanoacrylate gel. Healing completes in 7-10 days. A single mother colony produces dozens of frags annually once established.
Singapore Availability
Birdsnest is widely stocked — almost every reef shop in Serangoon, Pasir Ris, and Thomson carries basic pink and green frags. Aquacultured Bali stock dominates the budget end. Ponape birdsnest and designer morphs from US mariculture arrive monthly through specialty importers.
