Keeping Kuhli Loach in Singapore tanks

The Kuhli Loach is an eel-shaped, peaceful bottom dweller that spends its day burrowing and surfaces to forage once the lights dim. They’re social despite being shy, so we always suggest keeping at least five or six together; a lone Kuhli simply hides and is rarely seen. Give them a soft sand or smooth fine-gravel bed rather than sharp substrate, since they constantly sift it with delicate barbels that coarse grains can damage, and add plenty of caves and plant cover so they feel secure enough to come out.

Singapore’s soft, slightly acidic tap water matches their natural Southeast Asian streams nicely, and our ambient 27-29C sits right in their comfort range, so most setups need no heater. Being scaleless, they’re sensitive to medications and to poor water, so keep nitrates low with regular changes using dechlorinated water. They’re also notorious escape artists, slipping through filter intakes and gaps, so a tight lid and a guarded intake are essential.

See more in our bottom feeders range, and read our Kuhli Loach care guide and drip acclimation guide before adding them.
