Chagoi Koi Care Guide: Friendly Brown Variety
Ask any seasoned koi keeper which variety to add first to a new pond and the answer is usually chagoi. The chagoi koi is the famously friendly brown koi — the one that learns to hand-feed within weeks and pulls every other koi in the pond out of hiding once it starts feeding at the surface. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers the breed’s social behaviour, why chagoi reach jumbo sizes faster than almost any other variety, and Singapore-specific care notes for tropical pond keepers.
Chagoi Profile and Colour Range
Chagoi means “tea-coloured fish” in Japanese. Cyprinus rubrofuscus in this form ranges from olive-brown through copper to a deep chocolate, sometimes with metallic sheen (called Ginrin Chagoi when the scales reflect). Body shape is the single most important judging point — chagoi are bred for volume, length and powerful conformation. Top fish reach 80-95 cm; the world record chagoi exceeds 110 cm. The matte brown finish is unfussy but the body shape distinguishes high-grade specimens.
The Friendly Koi Reputation
Chagoi are biologically calmer than most varieties. They feed first, lose flightiness within weeks, and accept hand contact at the surface. Once one chagoi tames the pond, the other koi follow its lead. Many show keepers add a chagoi specifically as a “tank mother” to settle nervous high-grade fish. This social trait is consistent enough that it is now a documented selection point at Niigata farms.
Pond Volume for Jumbo Growth
Chagoi grow fast and large. A single jumbo target fish needs 8000-15000 litres of personal space at 1.5 m+ depth. Singapore HDB courtyards rarely accommodate this without dedicated planning. For 60-70 cm targets, 4000-5000 litres at 1.2 m suffices. Filtration runs 2x pond volume per hour through bead filters, drum filters, or moving-bed reactors. Use kit from the aquarium equipment range.
Water Parameters and Tropical Care
Target pH 7.2-7.8, KH 5-7, GH 8-12. Ammonia and nitrite zero; nitrate under 40 ppm. Singapore tropical heat (28-31°C) accelerates chagoi metabolism — they eat hard, grow hard, and produce serious waste. Run 5-10 per cent daily water exchange during heavy feeding seasons. Test weekly with a liquid kit. Treat top-up water with conditioner from the water care and treatment shelf.
Feeding for Body Volume
Chagoi are the protein-conversion champions of the koi world. Feed 38-42 per cent protein wheatgerm-blend pellets at 1-2 per cent of body weight per day during peak growth months. Three to four feedings daily during warm periods. Saki-Hikari Wheatgerm or Hikari Friend at SGD 75-180 per 5 kg from the fish food and feeding range are go-to choices. Watch the body shape develop through the shoulders — that is where chagoi quality reveals itself.
Judging Criteria and Show Standards
Chagoi are judged primarily on body conformation (volume, length, balance), skin quality (texture and tone), and uniformity of colour. ZNA standards weight body shape heavily because the matte brown does not carry pattern complexity. Penalty marks for missing scales, body asymmetry, or fin damage. Top-grade chagoi from Sakai Fish Farm, Marudo Carp, or Marusei bloodlines win the volume-based categories at Singapore Koi Club shows.
Tankmates and Pond Combinations
Chagoi mix easily with all other koi varieties. Their calming influence is most useful in show-grade ponds with nervous Showa or Sanke. Pair with go-along varieties like soragoi (grey chagoi cousin) and ochiba (autumn-leaf brown-and-grey). Avoid mixing chagoi with goldfish in show ponds — the chagoi will out-feed and out-grow them dramatically.
Singapore Sourcing and Pricing
Chagoi sit at SGD 40-200 for tosai (15-25 cm) at most Singapore importers. Two-year nisai at 35-45 cm runs SGD 400-1500. Jumbo adults at 70 cm+ from documented bloodlines push past SGD 5000-15000. Yamamatsu Singapore, Marudo distributors and Shintaro agents stock seasonal imports. Inspect under shallow water for body symmetry, finnage condition, and tone uniformity. Avoid fish with hollow bellies or pinched shoulders.
