An air pump for aquariums is an advantage during the night since plants need light to produce oxygen. In thinly planted aquariums the air pump supplies the necessary water circulation.
In aquariums with dense planting the air pump provides the aquarium with oxygen at night, since the number of plants means the oxygen concentration can drop to a dangerous level. When disease is present in the aquarium the air pump increases the oxygen level in the water, an essential condition for many medications

This small one-way valve sits in your air line and stops water from siphoning back into the pump, a cheap part that prevents an expensive and messy accident. It fits standard 4/6mm air hose, and you install it with the arrow pointing toward the tank. For Singapore keepers, the real value shows during a monsoon-season power cut, when a pump switched off below water level can let the tank back-siphon water down into the unit.

Because so many of us run air pumps on the floor beside or below the aquarium in tight HDB and condo setups, that backflow risk is genuinely common here.
