Using the ISTA CO2 Indicator in Planted SG Tanks
The ISTA CO2 indicator, or drop checker, gives planted-tank keepers an at-a-glance read on dissolved CO2 by changing colour, which is far safer than guessing from bubble counts alone. We fit one to every CO2-injected scape we set up, because the colour shift, typically toward green at a good level, tells you whether plants are getting enough carbon without tipping into the range that stresses fish and shrimp. The spill-proof design and viewable-from-any-angle shape make it practical day to day.
For Singapore hobbyists this matters because our tap water is soft and tends slightly acidic, so CO2 changes can swing pH more readily than in hard-water regions. A drop checker gives you a buffer against overdosing during the day and lets you confirm the level has eased off by night. Remember the indicator lags by an hour or two, so read it mid-photoperiod rather than expecting an instant response, and refresh the solution periodically so the colour stays accurate.
It pairs with any regulator and diffuser. Browse our CO2 systems range, and read our CO2 measurement guide with drop checker and pH and broader aquarium CO2 guide.
