ANS Catappa Bark for SG blackwater tanks
Catappa bark is the longer-lasting cousin of the familiar Indian almond leaf, and we recommend it to Singapore keepers who want a steady, slow release of tannins rather than leaves that break down in a week or two. As it sits in the tank the bark gives off humic and fulvic acids that soften the water’s character and encourage the conditioning many hobbyists associate with readiness to spawn in shrimp and small fish. A single 10cm piece works quietly for weeks before it needs replacing.
It pairs naturally with our soft, slightly acidic local tap water, deepening a tea-coloured blackwater tint that suits bettas, cherry shrimp and softwater nano species. The surface also grows biofilm that shrimp and fry graze on. Give it a rinse before adding, and let it sink on its own or tuck it under hardscape; introduce it gradually so any pH change stays gentle.
