ANS Jackfruit Leaves for SG Blackwater Tanks

Jackfruit leaves are a regional botanical many SG keepers reach for alongside, or instead of, Indian almond. They release tannins gradually as they break down, tinting the water that gentle tea colour associated with blackwater habitats and the soft, slightly acidic conditions our local tap already trends toward once dechlorinated. We like them for betta, wild shrimp colonies, chocolate gourami and other species that settle better in dimmer, humic-rich water rather than bright, bare tanks.

Rinse each leaf, then either drop it in dry to float until it waterlogs and sinks, or steep it briefly to speed staining. As the leaf softens it grows a layer of biofilm that shrimp and fry graze on, so we rarely remove leaves early. In our warm 27-29C tanks decomposition runs faster, so check pH and top up leaves every couple of weeks rather than dumping a large batch at once.

If the tint is stronger than you want for a display, our notes on managing aquarium tannins and a full blackwater botanical guide help you dial it in. See related conditioners here.
