This 56-70cm piece is a true centrepiece for large or feature aquariums, its sprawling branches capable of spanning much of a four-foot tank to create a dramatic, tree-like canopy. It is the kind of wood you design a whole layout around. Each natural piece is unique in shape, so plan the tank around the wood rather than forcing the wood into a fixed idea, and dry-fit thoroughly given how much of the scene it commands.

A piece this size leaches a lot of tannin initially, tinting the water amber and lowering pH, which suits blackwater biotopes well in our soft local water. For a clearer display, an extended soak and activated carbon help. Large branchy wood is buoyant and stubborn to sink, so anchor it firmly with rock or substrate weight until it waterlogs, which can take a couple of weeks in our humidity. Support its weight on a substrate base, not bare glass.
