Description

Made from the dried husk of the Cholla Cactus, this wood is a great addition to shrimp tanks, offering shelter and encouraging bio-film growth that serves as a natural food source. It also provides a surface for attaching plants and helps create a natural sunken log appearance in your aquarium.

ANS Cholla Wood for SG Shrimp Tanks

Cholla wood, the dried skeleton of the cholla cactus, is a shrimp-keeper favourite for good reason: its hollow, perforated tubes give shrimp endless hiding spots and a huge surface area for biofilm to colonise. In our warm 27-29C tanks that biofilm establishes quickly, turning each piece into a slow-release grazing station that shrimplets pick at all day. The S piece (7-8cm) suits nano tanks, while the M (14-15cm) works for a fuller layout or as an anchor for moss and Anubias.

Like most botanicals it floats at first, so we suggest soaking it until waterlogged or weighing it down for a few days before it sinks on its own. It will leach a little tannin as it cures, giving a faint tint that softwater shrimp appreciate but which fades over time. Because it eventually breaks down, treat it as a consumable that you periodically refresh rather than permanent hardscape.
