Sold by the kilogram, this natural layered slate is a flexible hardscape staple for hobbyists who want to build their own rockwork piece by piece rather than buy a fixed set. Its thin, flat, jagged-edged sheets stack and lean into ledges, caves and overhangs easily, and once submerged the stone darkens to a deep near-black that makes greens and fish colours pop. It is a favourite for cichlid tanks, but works just as well in planted and natural-style scapes.

Because you buy by weight, you can order exactly what your layout needs, which is handy for HDB and condo tanks where every centimetre counts and overloading a tank with heavy stone raises floor-loading concerns. Roughly 3kg gives you two to three pieces, so plan your structure before ordering. Always rinse new stone, stack with the heaviest pieces low and stable, and avoid balancing rock against thin glass where a shift could crack a panel.
