Manzanita wood (100-150cm)
ANS Manzanita Wood (100-150cm) for Big Branching Scapes
Manzanita is loved for its slender, intricate branching and pale, smooth bark, and at 100-150cm this is a substantial piece capable of carrying a large scape on its own. Its fine, fork-after-fork structure is hard to replicate with other woods, making it the natural choice for exposed-root, tree-style and dramatic competition layouts. Compared with denser driftwood it leaches relatively modest tannins, so it suits keepers who want the form without a heavy water tint.
A piece this long needs planning before it goes in: dry-fit it against your tank footprint and stones, and confirm the branches do not crowd the glass. Fresh manzanita floats, so we anchor it to slate or weight the base while it waterlogs over the first weeks. Its many junctions are ideal tie points for moss and epiphytes, and any early biofilm in our warm tanks clears as the system matures and grazers settle in.
