Using the SUDO S-890 Medium Breeder Cave for Plecos

This medium ceramic cave is a workhorse for spawning bristlenose and other cave-laying plecos. The handmade ceramic body is dense and inert, so it sinks immediately without floating off and holds its position even under decent flow. The smooth bore lets a male back in, fan eggs, and guard the clutch in the dark, enclosed space these fish instinctively look for when they are ready to breed.

At roughly 138mm it suits adult common and longfin bristlenose comfortably. We angle the opening slightly downward and away from the brightest part of the tank, which encourages a male to claim it as territory. In our local tanks running warm at 27 to 29C, plecos stay active year-round, so having a dedicated cave in place often means you spot fry before you even realise spawning happened.
