Where ANS Ex Ring Plus fits in your filtration
These sintered ceramic rings are biological media: their macro and micro pore structure gives nitrifying bacteria a huge internal surface to colonise, far more than smooth gravel or basic rings, so they punch above their weight in a canister or sump. They suit both freshwater and marine systems, and the slightly alkaline character is helpful where you want to nudge soft Singapore tap water up rather than down. We use them as the core bio stage in planted and community filters alike.
Order matters: water should pass mechanical foam first so the rings stay clean and keep flowing, otherwise debris clogs the pores and starves the bacteria of oxygen. Rinse them only in old tank water during maintenance, never under chlorinated tap, which kills the colony you spent weeks growing. In our warm water bacteria are active year-round, so a well-packed bio stage recovers quickly after a cleaning.
