This 2m by 1m blue filter mat is a generous sheet of high-density media you cut to size, which makes it as useful for sumps and large canisters as it is for the koi ponds it is sold for. The open fibre structure offers a big surface area for nitrifying bacteria to colonise while still letting water pass freely, even when several layers are stacked, so it does biological and mechanical duty at once without choking flow.

Because you trim it to whatever dimensions you need, it is an economical way to fill a custom DIY sump or a large filter chamber rather than buying pre-cut pads repeatedly. The dense fibres hold their shape and rigidity over a long service life, so it will not collapse into a clogged mat after a few months. Rinse it in old tank or pond water during maintenance, and stagger replacement across layers so you never strip out your whole bacterial colony at once.
