Coconut-shell activated carbon like this is the chemical filtration media we reach for when a tank needs polishing. It pulls dissolved organics, tannins and odours out of the water, and is especially useful for clearing the yellow tint that leaches from driftwood or for stripping residual medication after a treatment course. Run it in a media bag in your filter flow and you will often see noticeably clearer, fresher water within a day or two.

Carbon is best used as a tool rather than a permanent fixture. Once it saturates it stops adsorbing, so we swap it out periodically rather than leaving the same batch in for months. Avoid running it while dosing medication or certain plant treatments, since it will strip those out too. In our warm tanks, a quick rinse before use clears any fine dust before it clouds the water.
