Oase BioMaster Filter Foam (20ppi Blue / 30ppi Orange) explained

These are the genuine replacement foams for the BioMaster 250, 350, 600 and 850 canister filters. The 20ppi blue foam has coarser pores that trap larger debris and resist clogging, while the 30ppi orange foam is finer for polishing smaller particles; many keepers layer both, coarse first then fine, so the pre-filter screen and main foams share the load and stay cleaner longer. Choose by where in the stack you need more flow versus more polish.

In Singapore’s warm 27-29C tanks, biology and mulm accumulate faster than in cooler climates, so foams blind off sooner and flow drops if you ignore them. The trick is to never replace every foam at once: stagger swaps so a colonised foam always remains, preserving the bacteria that keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Rinse, don’t scrub, in old tank water between replacements to extend foam life.
