These single-piece replacement sponges fit the SUNSUN HN-011 (JP-101) and HN-012 (JP-102) units, and keeping a fresh one ready is the simplest way to hold steady flow on a nano or shrimp tank. The sponge does double duty: it traps debris mechanically while its open structure houses the beneficial bacteria that carry your tank’s biological filtration, which is the part that keeps water safe in our warm 27-29C setups where waste breaks down quickly.

Because that bacterial colony lives inside the foam, we never rinse it under the tap, Singapore’s chloraminated supply would set the cycle back. Instead, squeeze it out in a jug of old tank water during a water change, and only replace the sponge outright once it has gone soft, torn, or no longer cleans up. Swapping it on its own, away from your other media, avoids resetting too much biology at once and keeps the tank stable.
