Description

Hygrophila ‘Araguaia’

” Araguaia” is a river system in Brazil and it is under this name that the plant has become known.
There are many signs, however, that the plant is a Hygrophila lancea from Japan and Hong Kong.
The stem becomes 10-20 cm tall and 6-15 cm wide. It has compact, tight-sitting leaves and grows branches easily.
Pinching of the stems maintains a bushy look.
The colour is reddish brown to purple, promoted by good growth conditions.
The growth rate is average for a Hygrophila.

Hygrophila ‘Araguaia’ for Singapore Planted Tanks

We rate this as a compact, characterful stem plant for hobbyists who want reddish-brown tones without the demands of the fussiest red plants. The tight, close-sitting leaves and easy branching let it form a neat bush that holds colour well, making it a lovely accent against green carpets and broad-leaved species in a mid-sized scape. As tissue culture, it arrives clean of snails and pesticides.

To keep that bushy, colourful look, pinch the stems regularly and replant the strongest tips. In our warm 27-29C tap water it responds well to bright light and CO2, which deepen the colour and tighten the growth. Without enough light it tends toward green and looser spacing, so position it where it is not shaded by taller neighbours in a compact apartment tank.
