Description
Eleocharis acicularis is very common and thrives in almost all conditions in an aquarium. An open space without shading from other plants is still preferable.
After planting, the roots will start colonizing the surroundings, creating a beautiful carpet of 6-15 cm height. If the carpet grows too tall, you may carefully cut it back to the preferred height.
Eleocharis Acicularis for a Hairgrass Carpet
This is the classic dwarf hairgrass that gives planted tanks their flowing, meadow-like foreground. As a tissue-culture cup it arrives clean and snail-free, which we appreciate locally because it skips the pest-snail headaches that come with potted imports. Separate the cup into small clumps and plant them spaced apart; the runners then knit the gaps into a continuous lawn over a few weeks under good light.
Hairgrass carpets best with bright lighting and CO2, both of which suit the high-tech display tanks popular in Singapore homes. It will survive in lower-tech setups but spreads slowly and can grow taller and looser. Our ambient temperatures are comfortable for it, and conditioned local tap water is perfectly fine; just keep flow gentle near the substrate so newly planted clumps are not uprooted before they anchor.
