Description

This miniature version of the well-known Alternanthera is characterized by compact growth and a slower growth rate. It is particularly suitable for small aquariums or as a foreground plant in larger aquascapes. By careful trimming can you create a dense, red-violet carpet approximately 5 to 10 cm high.

Keeping Alternanthera Reineckii in a Singapore aquascape

The standard-form Alternanthera Reineckii is the workhorse red of the planted-tank world, and we like it for local setups because it brings strong purple-red colour to the midground without the fussiness of more delicate stems. Potted plants give you a generous handful of stems to spread across a layout, and once trimmed and replanted they thicken into a striking bush that contrasts hard against bright green carpets and dark driftwood.

Colour is light-driven, so under modest lighting AR tends toward olive-green; crank the intensity and add CO2 and it deepens to deep wine. In our warm tap water it roots readily, though the lower leaves can shed if shaded, so keep neighbouring plants trimmed back. Snip the tops, replant them, and let the cut stems branch from below to build density over a few weeks.
