Growing Bucephalandra Helena on Rock in Singapore Tanks
The Helena round-leaf buce comes pre-attached to a small rock, which makes it one of the easiest ways for HDB and condo aquascapers to drop a mature epiphyte straight into a layout. We like recommending it for nano cubes and shrimp tanks where space is tight, since you simply nestle the rock between hardscape rather than fiddling with glue. The compact rounded leaves stay neat, holding their form even in lower-tech setups without pressurised CO2.
In our local ambient water of 27-29C, Helena is comfortable without a chiller, though it grows slowly as all buce do. Our soft, slightly acidic chloraminated tap water suits it once you dechlorinate properly. Keep flow gentle so detritus does not settle on the rhizome, and resist the urge to bury that rhizome in substrate. New leaves can flush a subtle blue-green sheen under good light, and the rock base anchors it securely against curious fish and grazing shrimp.
