Description

‘Broad Leaf’ is a selection of Cryptocoryne wendtii with intense green, relatively broad submerged leaves, sometimes with an interesting brown flame pattern. As well as all forms of the time-tested Cryptocoryne wendtii, this plant is easy to cultivate. With a height of about 10-20 cm it is well suited for the midground, also for the foreground of higher tanks.

Keeping Cryptocoryne Wendtii ‘Broad Leaf’ in Singapore Tanks

This broad-leaf wendtii is one of the most forgiving crypts we stock, which is exactly why we recommend it to hobbyists running heaterless tanks in our 27-29C ambient. It sits happily in low to medium light and tolerates the soft, slightly acidic water that comes out of most HDB taps once dechlorinated. The brown flame pattern develops best under warmer, gently lit conditions, making it ideal for shaded midground pockets near driftwood or larger rocks.

Like all crypts, expect some melt-back after planting as it converts from emersed nursery growth to submerged leaves. Don’t pull it out when this happens. Leave the rhizome buried, keep parameters stable, and new submerged leaves push through within a couple of weeks. We pot ours undivided so you can split the clump and spread plantlets across the scape. Bury roots while keeping the crown above the substrate line to avoid rot.

A nutrient-rich substrate or a few root tabs make a real difference here, since crypts feed heavily through their roots. See our Cryptocoryne wendtii care guide and root tabs guide for dosing, and browse more options in our live plants range.
