Description
Cyperus alternifolius, often know as umbrellas plant, is a sedge originating from Madagascar.
the clumbs of tell bare (30-150 cm tall) crowned with long ,slender, dark green leaf like bracts. Small brown fuzzy flowers often develop from the top of the stem. Cyperus Alternifolius has clumps of bare stems (30-50 cm long) topped with stiff bracts (leaf like) and inflorescence.
As they are semi aquatic, they can be grown along the edges of pond or in terrariums by keeping its root system fully submerged.
Using Cyperus Alternifolius in Singapore ponds and ripariums
The umbrella plant is a semi-aquatic sedge, so we steer local hobbyists toward ponds, ripariums, and open-top marginal setups rather than full submersion. Its tall bare stems crowned with whorls of leaf-like bracts make a dramatic vertical accent, and Singapore’s year-round warmth and humidity let it grow vigorously outdoors on a balcony or in a patio pond with its roots kept wet.
Plant it with the root system submerged or in saturated substrate at the water’s edge, where it draws nutrients readily and helps shade and filter the water. It will not survive long fully underwater in a sealed aquarium, so we recommend it as a margin or pond specimen instead. Given strong light and wet feet, expect rapid clumping growth that you can divide periodically to keep the stand from crowding.
