We stock Lobelia cardinalis Purple for its rounded leaves that flush deep purple-green underneath, making it a compact, colourful choice for the midground. It grows at a moderate, manageable pace rather than racing, so we treat it as a tidy bushy accent that holds its shape between trims. In our Singapore tanks the warm 27-29C ambient suits it submerged without a chiller, and steady light coaxes out the purple undersides that give this plant its character.

Plant the portions a few centimetres apart and let them branch into a low cluster; trimming the tops encourages denser, more compact growth. CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate intensify colour and keep the leaves broad, though it remains adaptable in well-lit low-tech tanks. Our chloraminated tap water suits it once dechlorinated. Like many emersed-grown plants, it may adjust its leaf form as it converts to fully submerged growth in your tank.
