Seachem Tidal HOB Filter Line Review: 35 55 75 110 Models

Hang-on-back filters had a quiet decade. Canisters dominated serious tanks and sponges dominated nanos, leaving HOBs as the default beginner option that most experienced hobbyists outgrew. Seachem changed that with the Tidal range. The Seachem Tidal HOB filter rebuilt the format around real innovations — a self-priming pump, a surface skimmer, a clog indicator, and modular media baskets. After running the 55 and 75 across showroom builds at Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, this review covers the four sizes (35, 55, 75 and 110) and where each one earns its place.

What Tidal Got Right

Three innovations matter. First, the pump self-primes — no priming cup to fill, no shaking required, just plug in and water flow starts. Second, the integrated surface skimmer pulls oil film and protein scum directly into the filter rather than letting it accumulate. Third, the media basket is one large modular tray rather than the cramped chambers of older HOBs. These three changes together fix every long-standing HOB pain point.

Tidal 35 for Nano Tanks

The smallest Tidal is rated for 35 US gallons (130 litres) and runs at 280 L/h rated flow. Realistic flow with media is roughly 200-220 L/h. For a 30-60L planted nano or a 75L betta tank, the 35 is comfortable. SGD 75-95 retail at most Singapore shops. The filtration category at Gensou stocks the 35 and 55 most consistently.

Tidal 55 for 60-90 cm Tanks

The 55 hits 55 US gallons (210 litres) rated and 380 L/h flow. Realistic flow is 280-320 L/h. This is the sweet-spot size — pairs naturally with 60 cm planted tanks where a canister feels overkill and an internal filter feels weak. SGD 110-145 retail. The 55 is the most popular Tidal in Singapore for good reason: it covers the dominant tank-size segment with adequate biological capacity and quiet running.

Tidal 75 for 90 cm Tanks

The 75 scales to 75 US gallons (285 litres) rated and 550 L/h flow. Realistic flow with media drops to 400-450 L/h. Singapore retail is SGD 145-185. The 75 is honest territory for 90 cm community tanks where the simplicity of an HOB beats the cabinet-space cost of a canister. For heavily planted 90 cm aquascapes, an Eheim Classic 2215 still wins on biological capacity, but the Tidal 75 is genuinely competitive.

Tidal 110 for 120 cm Tanks

The 110 is the largest in the range, rated for 110 US gallons (415 litres) and 950 L/h flow. Realistic flow lands at 650-750 L/h. SGD 195-260 retail. This is where the HOB format starts feeling stretched — at this volume, a proper canister filter delivers more biological capacity, more media flexibility, and less visual obtrusion. The 110 makes sense for 4-foot tanks where cabinet space is genuinely tight and HOB is the only practical mounting option.

Surface Skimmer, Self-Prime and Media

The Tidal surface skimmer pulls oil film, protein scum and dust directly into the filter — saving the SGD 30-50 cost of a separate aftermarket skimmer. The self-prime mechanism is the Tidal’s most underrated feature: after power cuts, the filter restarts automatically; after cleaning, flow re-establishes within 30 seconds. The single large media tray fits 1.0-1.5 litres depending on size. Most Singapore users layer coarse sponge, ceramic noodles, and Seachem Matrix from the water care range.

Noise, Pricing, Pros and Cons

The Tidal runs 35-40 dB at 1 metre — louder than a canister but quieter than older HOBs. The waterfall return splash can be loud if water drops below the return lip; raising level to within 1 cm of the return eliminates it. Tidal pricing is mid-tier — more expensive than basic AquaClear HOBs but cheaper than entry canisters. Pros: self-priming pump, integrated surface skimmer, modular media basket, clog indicator. Cons: visible rear footprint, splash if water drops, biological capacity ceiling lower than canister equivalents.

Where to Buy and Which Size to Pick

Gensou stocks the Tidal 55 and 75 at 5 Everton Park. C328 Clementi, Polyart and Iwarna carry the 35 and 55 consistently. The 110 is often on indent. Lazada and Shopee listings from the Seachem distributor are legitimate. Nano under 60L: Tidal 35. 60 cm planted tank with moderate stocking: Tidal 55. 90 cm community tank from the tank range: Tidal 75. 120 cm tank where canister mounting is impractical: Tidal 110. Skip the Tidal entirely for shrimp-only tanks and SPS reef builds.
