It also works directly over an undergravel or bottom filter as the manufacturer intends.

For planted setups, remember an inert gravel carries no nutrients itself, so you will lean on root tabs and liquid dosing to feed heavier plants. Many hobbyists here cap a nutrient soil with a thin gravel layer for a tidy front edge, or run gravel alone for low-tech, easy-maintenance tanks. Rinse thoroughly before adding so the first fill stays clear; a quick swirl-and-pour removes most dust in minutes.
