Using GEX Akadama soil in killifish and soft-water tanks

Akadama is a baked Japanese clay granule, and this GEX version in the small grain is a tidy match for killifish and other soft-water setups. The porous structure gives beneficial bacteria plenty of surface to colonise and supports plant roots, while the clay tends to nudge water gently towards the soft, slightly acidic side. That suits Singapore tap water, which already arrives soft and a touch acidic, so you are working with the conditions many blackwater-leaning fish prefer rather than fighting them.

The small grain is easy to plant into and lets you build a shallow, even bed in a nano or breeding tank. Rinse it before use to clear fine dust, and pour water in slowly over a plate or your hand so you do not pit the surface. Like most active clay substrates it can soften and compact over the long term, so the occasional light disturbance during maintenance keeps it from clogging up.
